How to PSAT: Steps to Success

Every year, Cabrini gives us the opportunity to take standardized tests that demonstrate how prepared we are for college. Standardized testing is a vital part of college admission and receiving scholarships. When deciding a student's acceptance, along with viewing her grades, personal references, and resume, colleges look at standardized test scores to judge whether the student is a good fit for their school. The higher your score, the more likely you are to receive scholarships and be accepted into elite schools. To take advantage of such opportunities, it is imperative to prepare for the tests. The PSAT will be administered at Cabrini on October 19. Here are some tips on how to do well.

Cabrini's teaching staff understands the importance of high standardized test scores. To provide help for those who seek it, two of our teachers are here after school to practice PSAT questions with students. On Tuesdays after school, Dr. Wheeler stays to administer practice PSAT English tests. Ms. Allende is here on Thursday afternoons to practice PSAT math problems to help improve math skills. Taking advantage of the opportunity to work one on one with these people who know what they are talking about will help you get a head start for the SAT.

Also, take advantage of the PSAT practice booklet that the counselors provide for you. These are excellent resources, and you should keep them in your book bag because your teachers are sure to use them to help you prepare for the PSAT.

Ms. Fortier also has several SAT practice books on the self in her room that she will share with you!

It is also beneficial to take notes in core classes while teachers are discussing standardized tests. If you can't stay after school, you can study at home using Khan Academy, a learning app that has a category called "Test Prep." Khan Acandemy has links to practice tests and tutorial math and English videos as well as test taking strategies.

On the day of the test, remember to eat breakfast and get at least six hours of sleep. If you can, try to read something before the test to wake up your brain. Don't forget to stay positive on the day of the test! Your score on a standardized test doesn't define you, but it is part of how colleges will gauge how much you know. And the PSAT is a great opportunity for you to understand how prepared you are for the regular SAT. The same is true of preparing for the ACT Aspire which underclassmen will take to gauge how prepared they are for the ACT.

Do your best and remember to take advantage of all of the opportunities Cabrini gives you to prepare for college admission.
